Beyond this artisanal spectacle, Sri Lanka has several different methods of fishing such as Stilt Fishing(Riti Panna) , Beach Seine Fishing (Madela) , Outrigger Canoes (Oruwas), Kraal Fishing (Jakotu), Cast Netting, Rod Fishing, Trammel Netting.
Fishing is a cornerstone of Sri Lanka’s economy and food security, supporting roughly 3.6 million people and providing 50% of the nation's animal protein. The industry boasts a lucrative export market exceeding $290 million annually, focusing on high-value species like Tuna, Marlin, and Swordfish from the Indian Ocean. However, the sector faces challenges from overfishing, climate change, and illegal foreign trawling, prompting efforts to move toward sustainable offshore fishing.
